I just watched Fredericka Whitfield interview a government official on new Obama healthcare rules that take effect Sept 23rd. He said some patients won't have any co-pay for certain select screenings (for example, women over 40 will not have to pay any co-pay for breast exams). When pressed to determine how the medical providers would be reimbursed, the government official said that insurance companies will pay both the insurance coverage and the co-pay. For this expense, the government official said insurance premiums would likely increase about 1.5% for everybody. He also said that in order to hold down expenses insurers would most likely have a select group of doctors who could do the procedure but if patients did not want to see those doctors or didn't want to wait until they could be worked into those limited schedules, the patients would have to pay the entire expense for their screenings.
For those who thought this was going to be a great thing, I'm thinking we will continue to find out this mandated healthcare coverage is eventually going to cost us all more and give us less, just like this first revelation we are beginning to get details about.
