ucanit.......Wow, where did that come from????? Maybe because of your location, and situation, you were told WRONG!
I haven't participated in a lot of the discussions here lately, because, it seems to me there has been nothing but a lot of opinionated,
hate filled comments being thrown about. What was once a pretty active forum with at least 30 or 40 people participating, has been
reduced to about 3 or 4 who are in agreement with certain things that I totally disagree with.....Banter on....It's your forum now!
Anyway, you're assertion that the term Negro is wrong in this day and age may be true. However, do you have any black friends, or neighbors?
Have you had conversations with them lately about how to address them correctly? Do you know what terms THEY actually find offensive?
I have mentioned before, I have three "brothers" in the neighborhood. One live right next door, one across the street, and one about three or four houses down. We are neighbors. We have become friends. We do stuff together. Barbecues, sports outings, day trips, and yes, even attend church together. I enjoy those Sundays immensely. Get to go to an AME church, and a Southern Baptist one....Hallelujah! (can I say that?)
So, lets just let it all hang out....I know some terms I learned, or was told that could possibly be offensive to this particular ethnic group.
Nigga, Nigger, Spook, Shine, Jungle Monkey, Ho Daddy, Uncle Tom, Oreo.......etc....etc....etc.....
If someone tells you they don't want to be called a Negro, then don't call them that. Ask them what you should call them.
My next door neighbor had the best response to this....."My name is Jason, why don't you just call me Jason"?
Works for me....and, it works for them. And, since we have all known each other for about 10 or 15 years, they have a word to
describe me. They call me "cracker" I tell them that offends me...and then we all laugh!
Chill out a little, and keep an eye on that blood pressure!
